CLINICIAN’S GUIDE TO AHCC: EVIDENCE-BASED NUTRITIONAL IMMUNOTHERAPY, edited by Anil D. Kulkarni, Philip Calder, and Toshinori Ito

This book introduces the function and effects of the functional food, AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound), which is extracted from a culture of shiitake mushroom mycelia. Fifteen years have passed since The Basic and Clinical Researches on AHCC, which I co-edited with fellow ICNIM chairpersons. In that period, research on AHCC has spread throughout the world, and a great deal of new knowledge has been accumulated. The Clinician’s Guide to AHCC has been compiled to present this accumulated knowledge with contributions from the researchers who engaged in the studies.

The effects of AHCC on cancer prevention and cancer treatment have been mainly researched up until now; however, AHCC exerts more functions than just an anti-carcinogenic effect, such as anti-infective benefits against fungi, viruses, and parasites with its immunomodulating effects, anti-stress effect, chemotherapy-enhancing effect, and mitigating effect for immunosuppression.

I hope that this book will be helpful to deeply understand AHCC not only for clinicians and healthcare professionals, but also for consumers who will use AHCC in various clinical situations.—Prof. Masuo Hosokawa (Extracted from Preface)

About the Publisher: International Congress on Nutrition and Integrative Medicine (ICNIM) is dedicated to the field of nutrition, complementary and integrative medicine or, more broadly, integrative health, which is an important approach for disease prevention and global health promotion.

EATING DISORDER RECOVERY: A SIMPLIFIED GUIDE FOR FAMILIES by Caroline R. Blaire

From one mom to another . . . recovery is possible!

What happened to my beautiful girls? To our family? Where did I go wrong? What does this mean for our future? Those are the tormenting questions that invaded every moment of Caroline Blaire’s journey through not one daughter’s, but both daughters’, anorexia and intensive treatment and recovery.

Just as the adage says, “there are no two siblings alike,” Blaire’s experience navigating her two daughters’ anorexia revealed to her just how multifaceted, complex, and varying eating disorders are. Through her double-duty discovery that no two eating disorders are alike, Blaire was receiving the gift of deep and vast understanding of the causes, symptoms, triggers, and side effects of this elusive disease.

The result is this book—the book Blaire says she wished she and her husband had in order to begin to truly comprehend not only what would cause their daughters to starve themselves, but how to empathetically and effectively support them back to health.

With compassion, grit, enthusiasm, and research, Blaire unfolds a hopeful path that caregivers can get started on right away to help them gain control of any kind of eating disorder afflicting their loved ones. Calling it a “simplified guide” for families, Blaire demystifies the things she learned over several years supporting her teenage daughters’ partial hospitalization and family-centered therapy. Quick, to the point, and in clear and concise language, inside you will learn:

  • Why eating disorders are called by doctors “brain-based illnesses.”
  • How to know if your loved one may be suffering from an eating disorder.
  • The several categories of eating disorders.
  • How to look through a new lens to help you relate to your loved one’s incomprehensible behavior.
  • The way through shame and guilt.
  • Strategies for building empathy and sustaining patience when living with an eating disordered individual.
  • Treatment approaches, options, and criteria.
  • Tactics to use to talk to your loved one about compliance in recovery.
  • How to rationalize and navigate the personality changes of an eating disordered individual.
  • Self-care tips to ensure you can maintain the best support for your loved one.

Throughout the way, Blaire shares stories from the trenches, always with honesty and hope—hope that is based on the author’s own truth—that, not once, but twice, she witnessed true and lasting recovery. Let this book be your first step to participating in what can be a transformative journey for the entire family.

Caroline R. Blaire is a speech therapist in practice for more than twenty-five years. With her two daughters now recovered and living full, independent lives, Caroline happily empty nests with her husband in Wisconsin.

JAZZ: AMERICA’S GIFT—FROM ITS BIRTH TO GEORGE GERSHWIN’S RHAPSODY IN BLUE & BEYOND by Richie Gerber, Illustrations by Miguel Covarrubias

Jazz Americas Gift_web coverMusic is both a unifying force and a deeply personal expression of the self. Over the millennia, melody and lyrics have served as a multilayered mode of storytelling and expression of joy, sorrow, and hope. For America, no other musical style is quite so adept at this than jazz. Jazz: America’s Gift delves into the rich and storied history of American jazz—from its roots in early American folk song and the blues into the sound and splendor of the Jazz Age. Not just another history book, Jazz: America’s Gift is a unique and engaging exploration of the musical styles, traditions, innovations, and incredible talents that shaped jazz, and exposes how jazz itself shaped America’s history, bringing the country closer together.

No figure embodies the mood and music of this time like George Gershwin, a Jewish- American musical dynamo whose Rhapsody in Blue would become one of the most widely known compositions to come out of this time. Using song titles as markers along the path of Gershwin’s life, author Richie Gerber tells the evocative, often joyous, and sometimes heart-wrenching story of this often misunderstood genius. Gershwin’s life story is elegantly framed within the larger narrative of the rise of jazz music, with an attention to detail that makes the words leap off the page and music sound in your ears.

Jazz: America’s Gift is the perfect marriage between Miguel Covarrubias’s artwork and the colorful history of the Jazz Age. The interplay of Gerber’s words and Covarrubias’s images gives each page a rhythm all its own. . . . Who could ask for anything more?

Richie Gerber, musician, performer, comedian, and impresario has produced hundreds of jazz concerts that featured his band The Free Radicals, playing straight-ahead jazz, bebop, and swing with jazz greats like Eddie Higgins, former Count Basie alumnus Pete Minger, and five-time Grammy nominee Ira Sullivan. Gerber is the former owner of the Bread of Life Natural Foods Market, which merged with Whole Foods Markets in 1997. An organic farmer and natural foods store owner/operator, Gerber became a licensed nutrition counselor and went on to produce and host The Natural Grocer Radio Show for ten years, then the longest-running health talk radio show in South Florida. In 2014, Gerber and his wife, Julie, were included in Natural Prophets, a book about the pioneers of the health food industry. Visit www.JazzAmericasGift.com

Miguel Covarrubias can arguably be called the chronicler of “The Jazz Age.” Moving from his birthplace of Mexico to New York City as a nineteen-year-old in 1923, he instantaneously took the Big Apple by storm. He shared a studio on 42nd Street with Al Hirschfeld. Covarrubias’s unique and innovative style of drawing celebrity caricatures catapulted him into a storied celebrity artist, landing him gigs at top-tier magazines such as The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. Covarrubias was awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships.

“VOTE REPUBLICAN,” SAID JESUS NEVER.: THE RIGHT ISN’T RIGHT by Gabe Berman

At least 120 million people need to read this book ASAP.

The hypocrisy of Christian Republicanism (NOT Christianity in general) has become a plague of biblical proportions in the United States and Gabe Berman’s new book—”Vote Republican,” said Jesus never.—is a cure.

Why 120 million?

There’s over 320 million people in the U.S., 75% are Christian. At least half of those are Republican. That equates to 120 million people who side with the homophobic, anti-environment, anti-progressive politicians who believe the love of money, guns, racism, sexism, elitism, and industrialism trumps the love of unconditional love.

Jesus championed the poor. Love and forgiveness was his message. He has said, “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

He has also said, “Judge not, that ye be not judged.”

Does that sound like any Republican you know?

Of course not. But they constantly claim to be good Christians to support their greedy agendas.

Leave this book on your desk. Gift wrap it for friends and relatives.

The hypocritical hijacking of America must be stopped (and if you are a Christian Republican, it’s not too late to read this and vote with your heart).

Gabriel Berman is a writer, photographer, philosopher, and coffee drinker currently living on Long Island, New York.

These specific dietary interventions present new hope for individuals concerned about memory loss, and also have rapidly expanding scientific-evidence to support their effectiveness. Those at risk for and diagnosed with Alzheimer’s can begin adjusting their eating habits today and have a positive impact on their memory function for years to come.

This book outlines a comprehensive and scientifically based approach that includes the detailed 9-Week Diet Plan, recipes, and an example brain-healthy weekly menu. Also included are lists of the best and worst brain foods, instructions on how to read and what to look for on nutrition labels, and a food terminology guide. In addition, the available medications, supplements, vitamins, and medical foods that have been shown to help in Alzheimer’s prevention and treatment are discussed. Finally, The Alzheimer’s Diet includes access to the Alzheimer’s Disease Nutrition Tracking System (AD-NTS). The AD-NTS guides users through The Alzheimer’s Diet 9-Week Diet Plan, helps organize and understand brain-healthy dietary habits, track progress, and provides vital information for healthcare providers.
